Major Clinical Groups & Sections

The class is divided into five major groups of approximately 30 students each. These determine the sequence in which third year rotations are done, that is:

Group 1

  • Pediatrics (5 weeks)/Subspecialties II (Urology 2 weeks, Orthopedics 2 weeks, Vacation 1 week)
  • Medicine (5 weeks Presbyterian, 5 weeks affiliated hospital)
  • Primary Care (5 weeks)/Neurology (5 weeks)
  • Surgery (5 weeks)/Subspecialties I (one week of each of the following: Neurosurgery, Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology, Anesthesiology)
  • Ob/Gyn (5 weeks)/Psychiatry (5 weeks)

Group 2

  • Medicine
  • Primary Care/Neurology
  • Surgery/Subspecialties I
  • Ob/Gyn / Psychiatry
  • Pediatrics/Subspecialties II

Group 3

  • Primary Care/Neurology
  • Surgery/Subspecialties I
  • Ob/Gyn / Psychiatry
  • Pediatrics/Subspecialties II
  • Medicine

Group 4

  • Surgery/Subspecialties I
  • Ob/Gyn / Psychiatry
  • Pediatrics/Subspecialties II
  • Medicine
  • Primary Care/Neurology

Group 5

  • Ob/Gyn / Psychiatry
  • Pediatrics/Subspecialties II
  • Medicine
  • Primary Care/Neurology
  • Surgery/Subspecialties I

Each of the five Major groups is divided into two sections, A and B, of approximately 15 students each. The section A or B determines which subgroup within each quintile is done first and which second, that is:

Section A Always Does:

  • Medicine/Presbyterian first,
    then Medicine away
  • Pediatrics, then Subspecialties II
  • Primary Care then Neurology
  • Surgery then Subspecialties I
  • Ob/Gyn then Psychiatry

Section B Always Does:

  • Medicine away then Presbyterian
  • Subspecialties II then Pediatrics
  • Neurology then Primary Care
  • Subspecialties I then Surgery
  • Psychiatry then Ob/Gyn
